A loyal reader has taken exception to the fact that I posted the video "The Audacity of Hate," which highlights Barack Obama's bigoted allies. Here is her criticism:
Dear Mr. Duke,
By now I can't imagine there are Americans left in the USA who aren't aware of the Obama/Rev Wright connection. We all have seen the loops, heard the rants followed up by various excuses.
After viewing this disgusting piece of video I am thankful McCain never went after Obama for his choice of church and pastor. No good will come to our country if we continue to pick at this scab and not allow these wounds to heal.
While I have enjoyed reading your intellectually stimulating articles, this video is meant for one purpose only; to enflame racial tensions and bring further divide. I am shocked at your blatant attempt to use this video to incite fear, hatred, and divisions. Do you honestly believe your readership is unaware of the hatred and filth Rev. Wright spewed?
One of two things is taking place here. Either you've lowered your own journalistic standards in desparation to help McCain, in sheepish fashion too, as you have forgone your usually tag comments or opinions save the title. Or, you think your audience is stupid enough to fall prey to this scare tactic.
We know of Obama and his associations. And yes, they do scare the HELL out of many of us. But not because the color of his skin maybe be different from ours. But because his collective associations always come up on the side against America, democracy and freedom.
You're better than this, and you know it. Shame on you!
Dear Vivienne, First, I want to thank you for your many contributions. We have certainly taken note of them, and it's obvious that you are a sincere, good-hearted, intelligent woman (this is why I wanted to respond to your complaint). However, I must part company with you on this matter, as I think there are some things you're failing to consider. Let's take this one at a time. First, this video isn't really posted for the benefit of my readership. This is because they seem to fall into two main categories: Those who agree with me and would rather be boiled in oil than vote for Obama, and those who love to hate me and cannot be freed from their desire to worship The One. Instead, I have presented it because there is the distinct possibility that I might be able to get it wider exposure and place it before eyes that would not normally read me. Now I'll address the belief that there is no point in such a course of action because everybody knows about these alliances anyway. About a month ago I was talking to someone close to me, and I learned that she had just heard of Bill Ayers a night or two before. This surprised me a bit because, although she gets her information from the mainstream media, she had read one of my articles in which I had mentioned his name. My point is that people aren't as informed as you may think, and, moreover, they have very short memories. Why do you think that John McCain was reviled the summer before last by the very same Republican base that gave him the nomination? People tend to react emotionally; thus, when their emotions change and they are no longer angry, frightened, depressed, etc., so does their support. This is something that all savvy politicians and pundits know; it's just a fact of man's nature. This is why Dick Morris has been saying recently that the Republicans should reintroduce Reverend Wright. He knows what I know, which is that such a reminder would (the trick is actually disseminating the video widely enough without the mainstream media's help) sway a lot of votes. As for McCain's refusal to make hay of this issue, it is just another thing that lessens my estimation of the man and evidences his complete lack of wisdom. I say this because he has no moral right to place quaint, politically-correct ideas about being a gentleman ahead of the good of his country. And that is exactly what he's doing. In waging this campaign, he is not just seeking the presidency for himself. Rather, he is -- or at least should be -- fighting for us and against the darkness, against this red menace whose ascendancy is nigh. And I am outraged -- outraged -- that this foolish neo-con is subordinating this imperative to the desire to exhibit these plastic niceties. This is inexcusable, as our civilization hangs in the balance. As for inciting fear, hatred and division, the Truth will set us free. Make no mistake, the consequences of an Obama presidency would be so severe that I will use anything based in Truth (which is far more than the leftists can say) in an effort to defeat him. Fear? Yes, I want people to be afraid, very afraid, because Obama is scary. Hatred? Yes, I want them to hate -- not other people but the evil some people have embraced. Divisions? As Christ said (I'm paraphrasing), "Do not be deceived; I have not come to unite the world but as a sword, to divide brother against brother." "What fellowship hath light with darkness? The darkness hates the light," the Bible tells us. If spreading the Truth divides people, whose fault is it? Those with the audacity to speak it, or those with the audacity to reject it? If people didn't want negative Truths to be spoken about a presidential nominee, they shouldn't have nominated a man with a profoundly negative character and history. And let's be frank about this, Vivienne. Would we be discussing the propriety of this if at issue were a white candidate with corresponding alliances (KKK, a white power church, etc.)? This is, of course, a rhetorical question. What is unethical, outrageous and scandalous is not that a few lonely voices in talk radio and on the Internet are revealing Obama's true nature but that the mainstream media are whitewashing it. They are guilty of journalistic malpractice and, consequently, are in the process of foisting Beelzebub upon us. As for the scab, it simply obscures an infected wound that won't heal without treatment. As some black folks have pointed out -- ironically, in defense of Wright and Obama -- bigoted rhetoric such as that at the Trinity United Church of Christ isn't uncommon in black churches. And, as with Obama, the problem isn't that some people have the temerity to point it out, but that a wider timidity prevents others from doing so. The problem is that this bigotry exists and, due to cultural affirmative action, goes unanswered and often unnoticed. Sweeping it under the rug will not heal anything; it will only allow it to fester. If we want to eliminate racial divisions, good people, both white and black, have to take the bigots in the black community to task. They have to be told that their attitude is wrong, that it is ungodly. And they won't get this message if politically-correct whites pander to them and behave as if they have a right to hate. Remember, in the black churches in question and elsewhere in the black community, young children are fed a steady diet of racial pride and prejudice. And the cause of our divisions is this very indoctrination, not those who bring it to light. Anyway, this is what I believe very deeply, and I don't shrink from professing it. If you still think I've gone awry, we'll just have to agree to disagree. God bless you.
Nice response. Now put the video back at the top of the page where it belongs.

I agree. The truth no matter how painful or unpopular must be exposed. I watched the last debate on CNN and watched the little graph thingy at the bottom as the debate went along. I too noticed the negative response of the "undecided" when McCain mentioned Ayers. You have to ask yourself was it because the media has conditioned the masses to believe that the use of associates like Ayers and Wright is "dirty politics?" I hope and suspect that is the case, simply Pavlovian! If it is not, and the reason people responded negatively is because they know all about Ayers and Wright and accept these associates without concern...now we have got a problem!
I would say 1 out of 20 voters know no more than how to spell Wright or Ayers, and think Karl Marx was Groucho's brother.

I think the audience reaction was in part due to McCain's atrocious speaking ability. His delivery during that debate was horrible and made me wish, yet again, Romney had been nominated. McCain failed to go for the throat when the neck was exposed, he failed to make the right arguments about Obama's associations, and he may just fail the entire country by losing.

Dear Mr. Duke,
Thank you for your thorough reply. As always, your insightful well-shaped views are why I continue to read your columns and why I enjoying steering others here as well.
I have replayed the video several times after your response and yes, you are correct, people do react with emotions, myself included.
My sole objection to this video lies in its production value; How the ticking music emotes an urgency that if we don't act now we're in jeopardy of a Black America takeover. It left me with a sickening feeling - lost was the message of Barack and his rogue associations. The black vs. white trumped everything else. I found myself wanting to shoot the messenger but, perhaps I'm the wrong democraphic: a white, Roman Catholic mother in her 40s.
I am confident McCain will be victorious next Tuesday. Obama's socialist scoundrels' (Ayers, Khalidi, ACORN, even the LA Times and MSNBC) misdeeds and silence are loud warning cries to Americans. Barack Inc. doesn't want his background discussed but even he can't control all forms of media, yet. All this coming together is well timed for the undeciders to swing to McCain.
Don't underestimate the subtle deceptions Americans are noticing. These are truths: Joe the plumber's background check has been more thorough than Obama's. The mocking Palin effigy vs. the arrest of two U of Kentucky students for an Obama effigy. These are getting media play and the duplicity is staring us all in the face.
My narrative for McCain these the next 4 days would be hit Obama hard on the prepaid credit cards his campaign is accepting in with the AVS - address verification system turned off! Millions taken in. From whom? From where? How can he possibly be keeping campaign regulations under control? Tie that to undesirable foreign associates infiltrating the presidential election, to the out of control Wallstreet money grab as well. His donation policies are ACORN on steroids!
Lastly Mr. Duke, I worry and pray for our country the same way you do. McCain's victory will temporarily be overshadowed by the unhinged behavior of distraught followers - mass rioting across the country is not to be unexpected. That's what I was envisioning as I viewed the video.
Then again, maybe the election defeat outburst will allow Obama to step up and gain the commander experience he so lacks as he attempts to help restore order to our country.
God Bless you as well.
