Newark mayor Cory Booker made the mistake of deviating from the Marxocrat Party line, and now he’s learning the hard way that illiberal modern liberals don’t tolerate dissent. In fact, zey have vays of making you not talk.
And, it seems, of not talking to you.
Lamenting the administration’s attitude was former Clinton aide Lanny Davis, who said in an interview that there are “vicious people who are working for the president.” Well, yes, Lanny, they’re called liberals. And remember who hired them, too.
This story’s timing is uncanny, since I just wrote a piece about the immorality of liberals. And not only do we see it on full display here, but also evident is a rift in the Democrat Party between the old-line didn’t-inhale left and the even more degraded Choom Gang gulag crew.
As for liberals vs. conservatives, the difference is that while the latter may and often do disagree among themselves, they are more likely to walk away friends and unlikely to want to send dissenters to a figurative (or literal) re-education camp. But while liberals preach tolerance, they aren’t much for practicing it.
Note here that the true test of tolerance is how you react to opinions you dislike, as the exercise of the quality requires the existence of a perceived negative. After all, you don’t tolerate a beautiful car, a delectable meal or an intriguing museum; you relish those things. You would, however, have to tolerate a cold, bad weather or a Nancy Pelosi speech.
In light of this correct understanding of the term, how tolerant are liberals really? When they preach tolerance, it’s always in reference to things they wish to promote, such as homosexuality, multiculturalism or irreligiosity. But note that if you like homosexuality, you’re not tolerant of it.
You like it.
There’s a big difference.
And how do liberals react when the matter is things they really do consider negative? Just ask Juan Williams. After years of being a devoted liberal, National Public Radio terminated his contract because he dared utter some mildly politically incorrect comments in which he said that he gets “nervous” when he boards an airplane and sees people who identify “themselves first and foremost as Muslims.”
That was all it took. One comment.
And, hasta luego, Juan.
This is par for the illiberal liberal course, though. Remember that these are the folks who have given us speech codes on college campuses and in workplaces and hate-speech laws overseas (they want them here, too). Even more damnably, they created the standard stating that the Truth is no defense against a hate-speech charge. In other words, the feelings-derived leftist agenda is to be deified and everything else, even Truth, is to be judged under its dark light.
As for Williams, in the aftermath of his firing, he remarked that conservatives had been a lot nicer to him than had liberals. This is no surprise. Liberals are just like conservatives, you see, only a whole lot meaner, more underhanded and more vicious. And you wonder when people such as Juan Williams – who seems like a decent man but still counts himself a liberal – will figure out why this is so.
Well, as the old Dutch saying goes, “We grow too soon old and too late smart.”
