Dear Selwyn,

Far be it from me to attempt to correct one whose thoughts and writings I admire so but here goes:

You write, "Whenever the end times are, our own personal end time will come soon enough.

That is, we’re all going to die."

A careful reading of I Thessalonians chapter 4 demonstrates that this is not so. The dead will arise at the return of our Lord and then "we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them (the dead) in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord". (Verses 16 and 17).

One more thing , you write of "God's judgement". The "judgement seat" of God in the Christian New Testament is translated from the Greek word 'béma' and it is better understood as an award stand, such as the medals stand at the Olympics.

The Apostle Paul used many athletic terms and metaphors in his writings and some scholars believe that he attended the early Olympics.

I acknowledge that the overall point of the article is a correct and even poignant one. I contend, however, that in preparing for the afterlife we should seek rewards for our good deeds and charity rather than fear of supposed wrath from an otherwise loving God. Christ Jesus died for our sins and was risen from the dead for our glory. Either our sins are (already) forgiven or they are not.
