Welfare doesn't keep people dependent on the government . Lack of jobs, and jobs that pay well enough and provide good benefits does this . The overwhelming majority of people who are on welfare in America would rather be working and providing for themselves and their families. If they got a job offer that would enable them to get off of welfare they would jump at the chance . But the problem is that they can't get off of welfare because they can't find jobs ,period . Or they could get a job, but it wouldn't provide them with as much money as welfare . This is not their fault !
In our time, an enormous number of honest, hard-working people in America have lost their jobs through no fault of their own and they have no choice to be on welfare or they would be starving and dying on the streets . And anyone who thinks it's easy to find good jobs today is totally deluded . This is the fault of our government, in particular the Republicans . The Republicans have kept wages in general too low for decades, but they have allowed the cost of living to rise steaduly . This is a guarantee of social and eocnomic disaster for any country .
If our government raised the minimum wage, which has been stagnant for ages, this would lift millions of people out of poverty . But the conservative media keeps making ridiculous claims of how a higher minimum wage would supposedly "raise the cost of hamburgers and put millions of people out of work .
Ronald Reagan imposed disastrous supply side" trickle down " economics on this country about 40 years ago, and our economy has yet to recover . This kind of economics is based on the false premise that if you give more and more tax breaks to the wealthy , this will somehow cause the crumbs from the tables of the rich to "trickle down " and create general prosperity in this country for the poor & the middle class . But prosperity does not "trickle down ". It never has and never will .
Today, millions and millions of Americans are forced to work two or more jobs just to stay alive . And if you lose your job , you are at risk of losing your house and all your savings etc and being forced on to the streets or to live in your car- if you can keep it .
If the richest Americas would just pay their fair share in taxes, and churches were also taxed , our government would hav enough revenue to create millions of jobs and enable millions and millions of Americans to be better off and to live secure lives . The Democrats have been trying to do this for decades , but the Republicans continue to stymie their efforts . They call these sensible economic policies "socialism ".
be much better off and to live secure lives .
