Big Bad Putin? Covid Kingdom China Is the World’s Real Boogeyman

“China is going to eat our lunch?” Joe Biden asked dismissively on the campaign trail in 2019. “Come on, man…. They’re not competition for us.” The Trump administration has taken a very different posture. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has warned that Beijing is undertaking the “fastest, most rapid, most expansive peacetime military buildup in history” and called it “the single greatest challenge this nation has ever faced.” And, of course, President Trump has targeted China with tariffs that have become a bone of contention domestically.

Of course, some good, intelligent people, such as economist Thomas Sowell, consider the tariff strategy misguided. But wherever we stand and whatever the truth on that, a striking reality is inescapable.

China is not just our main geopolitical adversary; rather, it’s the most fearsome and foreign of foreign threats.

It is, in fact, from the Western perspective, the closest thing there is to an aggressive, planet-imperiling, alien civilization on Earth.

The Roman arena, where Christians might be thrown to lions, is long gone. But though the tormentors and methods have changed, this doesn’t mean such persecution has ended. In fact, 100,000-150,000 Christians have been slaughtered worldwide by Muslims (often jihadists) during the last two decades. One of the worst killing fields is Nigeria, where approximately 52,250 Christians were killed from 2009 to 2023 alone, according to the International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law. Holy Week hasn’t meant a break from this unholy phenomenon, either, with 51 Christians killed in Nigeria mere hours after Palm Sunday.

This is religious persecution — some would say genocide — the mainstream media generally don’t report, even though it’s savage and continual.

Douglas Murray to Joe Rogan: You’re Platforming RADICALS Who Mislead

Is one man’s radical another man’s reasoned voice? You might suppose that could be the thinking in this relativistic age. But this certainly wasn’t the perspective of British journalist Douglas Murray while appearing on Joe Rogan’s podcast last Thursday.

In fact, Murray called Rogan out on the show, saying he was platforming fringe voices peddling anti-historical views.

In the early 1900s, philosopher G.K. Chesterton said he longed for one aspect of a time few pine after. In the Middle Ages, he wrote, people agreed on the things that “really mattered” (in Europe, anyway). Just two or three decades ago, psychologist John Rosemond contrasted his time with Chesterton’s and said that during the latter, “people’s values were explicitly the same” (in the U.S., anyway). Both were essentially correct, too. Just as medieval Europeans were more philosophically united than early-1900s Europeans, so were early-1900s Americans more united than today’s Americans.

And, in fact, some would say the division is reaching critical mass. Just recently, while advocating an immigration moratorium, commentator Tucker Carlson warned that we must “figure out what it is that holds us all together as a nation” so that “50 states [do] not become 50 countries.” Carlson isn’t alone in this sentiment, either, according to a new survey conducted by John Zogby Strategies. It found that not only are many Americans concerned about secession, but also something perhaps unexpected. To wit:

To reference the iconic 1964 film Dr. Strangelove, have the Europeans “Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb”? One could wonder. After all, in 1956, the USSR sent 200,000 soldiers into Hungary. The West did not send arms to the Hungarians, call for Soviet regime change, or consider sending troops. In 1968, the USSR sent forces into Czechoslovakia to crush the “Prague Spring” liberalization movement. The West did not send arms to the Czechoslovakians, call for Soviet regime change, or consider sending troops. (In fact, the U.S. actually stated it would not get involved.)

A very compelling reason for this, of course, was the atomic sword of Damocles hanging over all and sundry. Why, then-president Ike Eisenhower explicitly said regarding Hungary that he was concerned about sparking nuclear conflict. Now, though, with Russia no longer being the USSR, Moscow has given up all its nuclear weapons.

Or, so one might think given Western European chest-thumping.
